Adding the mouse cursor to a screenshot

I'm using the HelpSmith's Image Tool to create screenshots for my help file. I would like to add the mouse cursor to some of the screenshots (e.g. over a menu item).

Does HelpSmith allow adding the mouse cursor to an image?

Capturing a screenshot with the mouse cursor

Yes, the Image Tool in HelpSmith allows you to capture a screenshot with the mouse cursor:

  1. On the Insert tab, click Create Screenshot (or press the Ctrl+F10 shortcut key).
  2. In the Image Tool window, on the toolbar, enable the Capture Cursor option.
  3. Click the Capture by Timer button, specify the time delay (for example, 10 seconds), click OK.
  4. Open the window that you want to capture and set the mouse cursor to the position that you need.
  5. After the specified time delay, return to the Image Tool window.
  6. Click OK to insert the captured screenshot into the topic.

Remark: Please note that the Image Tool inserts the mouse cursor as a separate object, which allows you to change/correct the cursor position on a screenshot at any time.

Adding the mouse cursor to an existing screenshot

HelpSmith also allows you to add the mouse cursor to an existing screenshot:

  1. In the topic editor, hover the mouse over an image, then click the Edit Image button that appears in the top-left corner.
  2. In the Image Tool window, on the left toolbar, click Add Cursor from File.
  3. Select the cursor file (.cur) that you want to insert.
  4. Click Open.
  5. Click OK to save the changes to the image.

Remark: For example, you can insert a cursor file from the "C:\Windows\Cursors\" folder.
