How do I change breadcrumb text and styles?

In our help system, we have a breadcrumb that shows the location of the current topic in the header.

What we want to do for the breadcrumb path is:

  • Change the style of hyperlinks (regular, hover style);
  • Change or disable the "<Root level>" text;
  • Change the delimiter from the ">" char to "|" char.

How can we do that?

Is it possible to turn off the "<Root level>" text, so it will not be shown for the topics that belong to the root level of the Table of Contents?

Is it possible to turn off the "<Root level>" text, so it will not be shown for the topics that belong to the root level of the Table of Contents?

You can set the No Path Text field as blank text, so it will not be displayed for the root-level topics.

How to use templates in HelpSmith

In HelpSmith, you can use templates which you can find in the Project Manager pane under the Templates node (as shown on the screenshot above).

To apply a template to a specific output format (e.g. HTML Help, etc.), you can double-click on the template that you need and then edit the template's settings.

If you need to add a new template to your project:

  1. On the Project tab, in the "Topics & Templates" group, click the lower half of the Add button.
  2. In the popup menu, click "Add Template".

How to insert the #TopicTitle variable (placeholder) into a template

The standard templates available in HelpSmith already include the #TopicTitle variable, so they display the title of the current topic.

If you need to insert the #TopicTitle variable into a new (blank) template:

  1. In the Project Manager, under the Templates node, select the template that you want to edit.
  2. In the topic editor, put the text cursor, where you want to insert the #TopicTitle variable.
  3. On the Insert tab, in the Placeholders group, click "Text Variable".
  4. In the popup menu, click #TopicTitle.

Many thanks.
