How to change page settings in PDF manual?

We have a HelpSmith project that we use to produce our web-based help system, and it works just fine.

When we generate a PDF manual, we need to change some page settings, such as page size, margins, etc. The Page Properties button in the toolbar does not seem to work.

Q: How can we change the PDF's page settings?

How to customize page settings for the PDF document

HelpSmith allows you to set the needed page size, page orientation, margins, header/footer, and other page settings:

  1. On the Project tab, click Project Options.
  2. In the Project Options window, in the left side, select the Printed Manual section.
  3. In the right side, click the Page Setup button.
  4. In the Page Properties dialog specify the page settings according to your needs.
  5. Click OK.

Editing Printed Manual Options

Remark: Please note that these settings are applied to printed pages when you compile your help project as Printed Manual, PDF document, or Word document.

The Page Properties button in the toolbar does not seem to work.

Using the Page Properties button in the toolbar

The Page Properties button available on the Write tab in the Ribbon toolbar allows you to specify page settings which are applied to the currently selected topic only.

Editing page properties of an individual topic

In other words, you can use the Write tab|Page Properties button to define page settings that are used when you need to print out an individual topic as described here.

The Page Setup button in the Printed Manual options works, thanks!

Does HelpSmith have an option to exclude specific topics from the compiled PDF document. Should we use build tags for that?

Using Build Tags to include/exclude topics

Yes, you can use Build Tags to produce different versions of documentation from the same help project. For example, you can use this feature to include/exclude topics, content blocks within a specific topic, etc.

You can find instructions on using Build Tags in this topic.
