How to fit content to a printed page in PDF?

When I generate a CHM file or Web Help system, the topics appear normally.

But when generating a Printed Manual or PDF documentation, if a topic is longer than the height of the page, its content is cut off at the bottom of the page. Please advise how I can fix this issue?

PS: BTW, I checked the HelpSmith's sample projects, and it seems to work fine there.

Using a table-based template for Printed Manual

I assume this is a known issue which happens as a result of using a table-based template for Printed Manual/PDF formats:

Usually, when the content of a topic or template contains a table whose row(s) is longer than the printed page, HelpSmith attempts to wrap such a row to a new printed page.

Template based on a table

However, if the template contains the TopicContent placeholder within a table and the topic's content does not fit to the page's height, it can be impossible to move the remaining content to the next page.

Solution: Add another template without a table in it

Since this problem is actual for printed documentation only, but not for electronic output formats, such as HTML Help and Web Help, you can add another template which does not contain a table. Also, you should set the new template as the default template for the Printed Manual format.

Step 2. Select a pre-built template

In the New Template dialog, you can select a pre-built template.
For example, you can select the Clean & Simple template.

You will be able to customize the template's appearance after you have added it to the project.

Remark: Please note that if you have added a blank template, you should edit it, and insert the following objects into it:

  • The #TopicTitle variable (click: Insert tab|Text Variable)
  • The TopicContent placeholder (click: Insert tab|Topic Content)

Step 3. Set the default template for Printed Manual

In the New Template dialog, in the Use As Default Template box, check the Printed Manual option.

Similarly, you can edit properties of an existing template by double-clicking on it in the Project Manager pane.
