How to create bulleted and numbered lists quickly
When editing the content of a topic in my help project, I often find myself needing to create bulleted and numbered lists with the same font and indentation settings.
Q: Is there a quick way to create these lists with the desired settings?
Creating a single-level bulleted or numbered list
In HelpSmith 10.x, you can simply apply one of the standard styles named Bulleted List or Numbered List which you can find in the Styles pane (click: View tab|Styles).
Remark: Please note that indentation settings are actually stored in paragraph styles, but not in list styles. Therefore, you should also apply the List Paragraph style along with the list style.
If necessary, you can modify settings of the list styles to change the font size or color of the bullet/numbering marker, and other settings.
Using the List Paragraph style for different list levels
It should be said that when you create a single-level or multi-level list, you should apply both a List Style and also a List Paragraph N style to the paragraphs of this list.
Remark: Please note that since the List Paragraph N style is a child style of the Normal style, it will have the same paragraph alignment, spacing, and font settings as the main text (which uses the Normal style), but special indentation settings (First Margin, Left Margin) depending on the list level.
How can I create a multi-level list by using styles?
How to create a multi-level list quickly
If you need to create a multi-level list, you can:
Remark: When you apply a List Paragraph (Level N) style, it automatically changes the Level setting of the selected paragraphs. Therefore, there's no need to edit the Level value manually. As a result, these paragraphs will use the list settings of the corresponding level from the linked list style.
So a paragraph can be associated with both a paragraph style and a list style at the same time. Is that correct?
Yes, a paragraph style stores paragraph-related settings (for example, first margin, left margin, etc.), and a list style stores list-related settings (for example, list kind, bullet color, etc.) only.
This is why the editor allows you to apply a paragraph style and a list style to the same paragraph(s) in the topic. BTW, the same approach is used by MS Word and other popular editors.
